Connor couldn’t fathom how the color black could have so many shades. The one that colored his dreams was the darkest he’d ever seen. He welcomed it, for it was peace, an absence of thought. Yosaku’s breaths calmed him. Her sleep sank him deeper into tranquility. The quiet sounds of the jungle soothed him. He ventured into the black, curious to find what was there.

Alissa had filled his dreams of late. She was broken, a mere husk of what she’d been only a few days ago. He sensed her hiding within the dark shroud and hunted her. Slivers of emerald spun toward him, threatened to hit him, then passed him by. More followed as his dream picked up momentum. He raced through the jungle. It was the dead of night, and he was on her trail, closing. The green kept coming, and Connor kept brushing it aside. He had the sense he was going uphill, wending his way along a river. Its silver scales then showed themselves, running past him as he ran counter to them. The river became smaller, a brook, then a stream.

He paused. The black was still black, but other colors invaded his dream. Above was now the darkest blue, punctured by stars that barely glimmered, as if they’d no power over his dreamland. Yet he knew that had to be wrong, because stars always had power. They fueled dreams and they gave hope. The stars were Gods. They were eternal. It was wrong, but it was right here; the God’s had a hand in ruling . The black was also green now, the darkest of green cut with slivers of a lighter shade. And a stripe of curling brown led away from his feet, although he couldn’t see those, nor his legs, nor his upper body. He wasn’t there, not really. He was being allowed to see the scene, but who had given him permission?

He came to the top of a hill, and gray then colored the black—a silver gray cloaked with jagged green lines. The gray was angular. It wasn’t natural. Vertical lines had thrust upward. He closed cautiously now. The gray became pillars, and the pillars rose upward where they morphed the green again. He took one more step forward, and a light blinked into existence. It sprayed him with its glow and lit up six columns carved into the rock. Each was fluted, turned at the bottom and top. They had steps under, and a solid band of flat rock over. It was a square carved from a cliff, a temple sculpted from the mountain itself, and a bright light now emanated from it.

He had a vision upon a vision, and Alissa encroached into his dream as she approached the temple. She rested heavily on her staff as if it were the only thing keeping her upright. The hunch in her back had become more pronounced. She turned, exposing Connor to the full force of her twisted soul. Gone was her sleek, scaled, reptilian face, but its structure remained.
